Magazine Inspiration and conventions

These are a couple of the magazines that I looked at for inspiration when creating my magazine cover for Overdoze. I wanted my magazine cover to have some of the same features as a real Empire magazine so that it looked natural and passable as an edition of Empire magazine. I found an image of the font and used that for my magazine, I noticed it wasn't exactly at the top and had a tagline unrelated to the film above it. I used this idea for my magazine and, seeing as my magazine was meant to be from early 2016, I created a line saying "The best films of 2016 so far". This is using a feature that real magazines use and relates to the time of the release. I also noticed that most Empire magazines did not have a background that was from the film and instead had a grungy, textured background behind the character so that the viewers eye is entirely drawn to the character. I copied this by removing the background behind Geoff and replacing it with a textured background.

I also noticed that most of the empire magazines show the character from the waist up or closer and rarely is the character shown from a longer shot, I copied this when creating my magazine by making the image of Geoff larger so he was larger and took up more of the magazine front cover.

One final thing I noticed just from looking at existing Empire magazine covers was that most of the characters shown clip slightly over the Empire logo, in the two shown both of the main characters have their heads partially blocking the Empire logo but in a way that is not too intrusive, I also copied this style when creating mine to make it look more genuine.

All of these features and conventions make up a typical Empire magazine and I try to use these to make my magazine look like an actual magazine cover and engage the viewer more.
